You’re probably here because at some point you’ve wondered, “Why is corporate HR so terrible? How can I infuse my social justice values into my HR policies and practices?” Me too.

I entered the world of human resources after a decade of holding low-wage service sector and pink collar jobs. I’d had enough bad jobs to know that given the opportunity, I wanted to do something different and better. So when I began doing HR at values-aligned movement organizations, I worked to create purpose-driven, human-centered, and care-centric systems, policies, and practices.

I’ve had the privilege of working for some of the progressive movement’s most innovative, rapidly-growing nonprofits and foundations, including the Groundswell Fund, the National Domestic Workers Alliance, the Third Wave Fund, and the National LGBTQ Task Force. I also co-founded Rad Ops, a Facebook group for HR, Operations, and Finance professionals in progressive nonprofits, and I serve on the Board of Directors of the Highlander Research & Education Fund. In 2024, I co-published “The Equitable Hiring Guide,” a book that provides tools and guidance for leaders on how to infuse equity into every aspect of their hiring.

After a 15 year career as an HR professional, I launched Shuai Strategies in 2022. We support movement organizations and the people powering them to thrive by working to find both/and solutions to either/or HR problems.
